They're meant to be bold and manly, and are mostly temporary until someone designs a theme. I honestly really like the new theme for SMF. I might do some slight modification of the source files and leave it at that. If that's the case, I'll spend some real time on the tags, and also have some kind of icon with them so they're more recognizable. Until then, only those of us who memorize all of the 3 letter codes will get to enjoy Message icons.

I'm not listing them all. I just don't get RLS, SPM, MNY, PHL, HDW, and tht's it.

I'm going to make new tags that spell out all of the words and also have icons. This will dramatically improve the usefulness of the tag system.
